Field Trip to Collin College Health Service Center

On Tuesday, November 1, 2016, the students from the Student Opportunity Center attended a field trip to Collin College in McKinney. The students were selected based on their career interest survey that was administered during the fall semester. While visiting the Health Sciences Department, the students were given a guided tour with hands-on activities that included taking the vital signs of computerized patients, dissecting the anatomy of a mock corpse in a morgue, and a walk through of the student services building. The guided interaction from a Collin College Ambassador provided the students with information about financial aid, purchasing books/supplies, and where to go for help from an academic counselor.

This field trip was sponsored as part of the Teens and Technology (TNT) grant that is funded by the Frisco Education Foundation and their partnership with Nokia.  Our goal is to introduce our students to as many fields as possible in the area of science, math and technology professions.

November Student of the Month

fullsizerender-4 Ja’Lyn Johnson is the November Student of the Month at the Student Opportunity Center. We are so proud of her!

Ja’Lyn Johnson is a phenomenal young lady! She comes to class each morning ready & works hard every day. Her work ethic is as inspiring as her integrity and along with her wonderful attitude & can-do spirit, she will go far… Dr. Seuss comes to mind: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…” I am thankful for playing a part in her educational journey. Ja’Lyn truly deserves to be student of the month!

Melanie Catsoris, Math Teacher

Focused, hard working and respectful are three words that describe Ja’Lyn Johnson.  She is a model student who is a kind and positive influence here at the SOC.  Ja’Lyn smiles in the halls, is kind to her peers, is prepared for class, and appreciates the accelerated school environment, making the most of her time.  Ja’Lyn is another example of student of the month.

Jennifer DeGraff, Government and Economics Teacher

Ja’Lyn is very dedicated to her goal in finishing quickly so that she can graduate.   She also works very hard in her labs and always comes to class with her science lab assignment sheet signed and multiple assignments completed.  Ja’Lyn is a wonderful model of the type of student who is successful in our unique environment here at the SOC.    In a nutshell, Ja’Lyn is highly motivated and a self-starter which exemplifies the type of person who will be well prepared for the working world.
